KANTON ATOLL GT FLY-FISHING
PHOENIX ISLANDS, KIRIBATI
CATCH & RELEASE ECOTOURISM
“Kanton Atoll remains as one of the last havens on earth with no regular and sustainable access, shielded from the modern world. This remoteness, coupled with official world heritage status, this atoll of Kiribati has one of the healthiest and most virgin ecosystem to still exist on this planet…
Kanton is pefect for GT Fly Fishing with a lagoon that is over 40 square kilometres in area, composed primarily of deeper coral shoals and sandy flats encircling its internal circumference. The exterior of the atoll features a traditional fringing barrier reef that drops quickly to 200 feet in some areas and beyond. This zone features coral bomboras, rocky limestone and the occasional expanse of sand and rock type flats.
ACCOMMODATION
Single capacity, Kiribati-style “Buas” will be available for each angler. Buas are raised off the ground and encourage wind and airflow to keep conditions cool. Made out of natural materials that are locally sourced to promote a self-sustainable initiative. Each Bua is neatly fitted out with mattress, pillow, sheets and mosquito net for each angler. Freshwater from tank and non-potable well-water will be available for showers and washing. Flushing toilet will be accessible (powered by solar pump). Laundry services are available on request.
EXPEDITION LIFE
Whilst we do our best to maintain a minimum threshold of comfort, expeditions are operated out in the “frontier”. We include all meals, bottled purified water, soda, basic laundry service and guided expertise that is unparalleled around the world for expedition-style angling. AC charging (Aus/NZ style 3 pin plug) and cold drinks are available on a daily basis. Beer and other beverages can be arranged on request at additional cost.
EXPERT GUIDES
Intimate and expert service with one experienced Kanton guide allocated on a 1 to 2 angler basis. Guides are equipped with medical kits, first aid training and satellite communications.
Our job is to keep you safe. All guides are equipped with Garmin InReach devices for reliable communications and tracking. Satellite phone is available for emergency communications. Our head guide and 2IC camp operations are trained in Senior First Aid (Australian Standard).
WHAT'S A DAY LIKE AT ROCK EXPEDITIONS?
“Giant Trevally patrol here in reckless abandon, devoid of human fear and in staggering numbers. The GT dominates the surf line, lagoon and the only passage of the atoll, located on the western, leeward side. The passage, where current and tidal movement control the lifeblood of the atoll is separated by “Spam” Island, where only the strongest survive. The passage is Kanton’s GT nerve centre.”
Anglers will have the opportunity to be part of the angling strategy on a day-by-day basis and will form scouting parties to explore various parts of the atoll. Fishing will be primarily wading and shore-based. A minimum degree of health and fitness is required as well as discipline and self-reliance.
If you are attending as a solo angler or less than the minimum requirement (we will advise you), we will do our best to join you with a group. Please send us an email if you would like to join – we love to bring solo or odd-numbered anglers together because they tend to be mates for life!).
SEASON
Whilst the season is year-round, expeditions are conducted on a custom schedule only. Expeditions are facilitated via back-to-back charter flights.
WEATHER
Local weather averages between 26°C (79f) to 32°C (90f) and is often calm and sunny. Life in the tropics means rain squalls and thunderstorms are part of daily life but they are usually short-lived! We recommend bringing a quality rain/spray jacket.
TRIP CAPACITY
We require a minimum of 4 anglers to operate an expedition. For exclusive groups, we require all deposits to be paid to confirm the reservation. We can operate with a maximum of 5 anglers.
ARE YOU A SOLO ANGLER?
